Image # A58-119; I captured this late evening image of Friends University with its lighted tower.  Although Friends University was officially founded in 1898, its history goes back to 1887 when Garfield University opened its doors for classes and closed in 1890 due to financial difficulties.  The school was reorganized and re-opened again in March 1892 as Garfield Central Memorial University.  And again it closed for good November 18, 1893.  For five years, the building was a haven for owls, birds and bats until the Kansas Society of Friends (better known as the Quakers) opened the doors of Friends University in September 1898.  I once read that when this university was first built, that it was located in the country west of Wichita.  However, this certainly isn’t the case anymore; as it isn’t far from being centrally located today.  I have been honored by the appearance of this photo as “PHOTO OF THE WEEK” on the Wichita Photographers website.
