Image # A58-253; I captured this image of a Kansas wildflower called “Musk Thistle” also known as a nodding thistle. The heads are purple or lavender and are 1½ to 3 inches in diameter and have spines on the tips which are from ½ to 2 inches long. The flowering period of this plant is May thru August, but may be observed into autumn. They are often bent over or "nodding" at maturity. This plant can be found in pastures, prairie ravines, open woodlands, waste areas, and fertile lowlands. It grows primarily in the eastern two-thirds of Kansas. This native of southern Europe was imported into the U.S. for floral gardens in the early 1900's. It escaped and is now widespread.
