Image #'s A58-295, 296, 297; While visiting the small community of Catherine, Kansas I captured this image of the St. Catharine Catholic Church.   The church of St. Catharine is one of the best preserved churches in Ellis County.   The town was named after Catherine the Great.   The Catherine founders were the first to leave their Russian colony of Katharienstadt, the largest and most important one of the Volga German colonies in Russia.   Every street in Catherine is named after a saint.   An interesting tradition practiced by the people of Catherine was the custom of living in town and traveling to their farms at dawn and returning in the evening.   Today the church of St. Catherine is a dramatic focal point on the horizon near the community of 300 people.   The images (center and right) are only two of the many beautiful stained glass windows in this Church.
