Image #’s A58-325,313,326; These are a few images from my collection of Kansas Air-Conditioned Privies or (outhouses) as they would be called.  These pieces of history are much like some of the old barns that dot our country's landscape; left unattended and forgotten until one day these structures will cease to even exist.  An interesting fact about the history of the quarter-moon on the door of the outhouse goes way back.  The custom started in Europe back in the 1500’s.  It was common practice, back then, to identify which outhouse was which by means of a circular symbol on the door of the men’s and a quarter-moon on the ladies.  The use of symbols rather than words was necessary due to the widespread illiteracy of the times.  The circular symbol and the quarter-moon were Europe's version of the Chinese Yin and Yang.
